Apple releases new iPhones every season and now with the new 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max available, you might be looking at your current phone and dreaming of an upgrade.
Believe it or not, your old phone could be worth hundreds of dollars, which could provide a nice little discount on your next upgrade.
But how much is your old iPhone worth, and how can you get the highest trade-in value for it? At Glyde, we believe in providing everyone the opportunity to purchase high-quality premium used phones online at affordable prices.
Taking care of your phone helps to increase resale value. We created this guide to help you keep your phone in good condition to maximize trade-in value, and get the best deal on your next upgrade.
What’s Considered Good Condition for My Used iPhone?
Phones in good condition have minimal wear and light scratches or minor scuffing. The screen or back glass should not be broken, and there should be no water damage.
Screen damage is one of the most common and costly things that happens to old phones – so keeping your screen nice will greatly improve your resale value.
Aside from that, one of the most important things you need to look out for is water damage, and damage to the internal components of the phone. Most of the time, it’s hard to tell the condition of electronics in your phone, but at Glyde, we run full 30+ point quality checks to ensure that all our used phones work properly, and that we estimate the true value of your phone.

6 Tips to Get The Most for Your Used iPhone
If you’re looking to maximize the value of your used phone, there are a few things you should keep in mind throughout the process:
1. Deep Clean Your Phone First
Even if you have been keeping your iPhone in a case, it is still important to deep clean your phone before attempting to resell. There is a right way to clean, and a few steps to do so properly:
First, unplug any cables and turn off your phone. If you are planning to resell you can remove any screen protectors or cases.
Next, you are going to use a soft, slightly damp, and lint-free cloth made of microfiber or something similar to a lens cloth. Do not use cleaning products or compressed air.
Finally, if you have an iPhone 8 or older, you can lightly clean the home button, and avoid getting moisture in openings for any phone model.
2. Fix Anything You Can (Within Terms & Conditions)
If your phone screen is cracked, you might want to consider getting it fixed before reselling. It might be worth it to fix your screen, or it might cost you more money to fix than you will receive from your trade-in/sell in.
Knowing whether it’s worth it really comes down to the model of phone you have, and the extent of your damage. If it’s strictly damage to the glass – fixing it should be fairly cheap and will be worth the investment. If there is deeper damage such as LCD damage or something wrong with the internal components, you may be better off leaving it and selling for whatever value you can get.
One thing you’ll want to make sure you abide by is the terms and conditions provided by Apple for your iPhone. A lot of fixes to iPhones void the warranty of your phone by Apple, which can decrease its value sometimes. To avoid this, be sure to consult with an Apple store or registered refurbisher in order to make sure you don’t void any warranties or policies that can increase the value of your used iPhone.
3. Timing is Everything
In order to get the most from your used iPhone, you’ll want to plan your trade-in around new iPhone releases. Apple usually discounts the price of older models by around $100 as they release a new phone.
Many loyal Apple customers flock to the newest model, trading in their old iPhones after the release to upgrade. When there is more supply and less demand, the price goes down. This can decrease your trade-in value, so you’ll want to make sure that you try to sell your used iPhone before the new release – especially if it’s an older model.
However, the exact opposite can also happen with newer models. Usually, older models (2+ generations ago) go down in price, while the last generation’s trade-in value goes up after a new release. So, use this trend in pricing to your advantage when timing your trade-in to get the best value for your used iPhone.
As you can see in the table above, before the release of the iPhone 6 in 2015, the iPhone 5S jumped to 130% of its value up to the announcement day of the new phone. This would have been a great time to trade-in or resell an iPhone, to be able to purchase the new release.
4. Choose A Site That Offers Fair Value
At the end of the day, the goal is to get the most for your used phone. But, not all sites offer the same used iPhone prices. You want to choose a site that offers fair trade-in value based on the condition of your phone – not just the condition of the average phone they receive.
At Glyde, we do things a bit different – offering trade-in value specific to your phone, based on its condition, performance, and age. If you did all the work to keep your used phone in great shape, don’t pay for it on the backend by not getting what you deserve for it.
Our used phone trade-in program makes calculating your phone’s value as easy as taking a 3-minute quiz – and bases the value of your phone off of its actual condition, not just a bunch of averages. Don’t settle for less than what your phone’s worth, trade-in with Glyde to get the top dollar for your used device.
5. Keep Your Phone in Good Condition
It kind of goes without saying that higher-quality phones are worth more. No one wants a broken used phone, and companies need to make money on the phones that they buyback. So, if you want to get the most for your phone, you’ll need to keep it in tip-top shape.
Look for a good screen protector. This is one of the best ways in which to protect your screen from breaking. Make sure it is made from tempered glass rather than plastic. If you have back glass on one of the newer model phones you should also place a back glass protector.
Make sure you have a protective case. Although many of the new iPhones are “water-resistant” this does not mean they are waterproof. So not only is it important to get a protective case but try to find one that is waterproof as well such as an Otterbox or Lifeproof case.
Recharge your phone on a regular schedule to preserve battery life. Also, try not to let your phone’s battery die, keep it between 40-80%, and avoid leaving it plugged it at 100% for long periods of time, as this can drain battery life long term.
6. Keep Your Original Box & Charger
Keeping the original box and charger helps to prove that you are the original owner of the phone, and also helps with packaging when it comes time to resell. Most resellers will offer you more money if you have the original case and a charger to go with the phone – as this is something all buyers expect with their new phone.
