Which iPhone, iPad, or iPod Model Do You Have?

There are many generations of iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches in the marketplace right now. Based on appearance alone, it can be hard to determine which exact model you have. Here are some helpful tips to tell the models apart.

iPhone 3G vs iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS are two models in the iPhone line that have a similar shape, which makes it difficult to tell them apart based on appearance alone. One of the easiest ways to tell is through the apps you have on your device. If you have the Compass, your phone is an iPhone 3GS. If you don’t, you own an iPhone 3G. Another feature that the iPhone 3GS has is Video. If your phone doesn’t have that function, you own an iPhone 3G.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 4S

Telling an iPhone 4 from an iPhone 4S can also be tricky. The easiest way to differentiate the two is to check the back of your phone and refer to the model number. The iPhone 4 model numbers are A1349 and A1332 and the iPhone 4S model number is A1387.

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 may look like the previous iPhone models from afar, but the iPhone 5 is lighter, thinner and taller than the iPhone 4S. And while the iPhone screens look similar the back of the iPhone 5 is two-toned. The iPhone 5′s also have the model numbers A1428 and A1429.

iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5C comes in five bright colors (green, blue, yellow, red, and white) and its outer shell is made of hard plastic. The iPhone 5C carries one of the following model numbers; A1532, A1456, A1507, A1529. The iPhone 5S is two-toned like the iPhone 5, but the home button on the 5S does NOT have a square icon on it due to the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The 5S comes in silver, space gray, and gold and the model numbers are A1533, A1453, A1457, A1530.

1st Gen. iPad

The 1st Gen. iPad should be pretty easy to distinguish. The 1st Gen. iPad has a curved back and no cameras.

iPad 2 vs. 3rd Gen. iPad

The iPad 2 and 3rd Gen. iPad are also very similar. You can differentiate the two by checking the model numbers on the back.

iPad 2: A1395, A1396, A1397
3rd Gen. iPad: A1416, A1430, A1403

Another distinguishing feature is Keyboard Dictation. If you go to Settings, then click General, and tap Keyboard, the 3rd Gen. iPad will have Dictation as an option.

iPad 3rd Gen. vs iPad 4th Gen.

The iPad 3rd Gen. and the iPad 4th Gen. are also very similar in appearance. Most of the changes are in the hardware of the device like a new processor and a better Facetime camera. The key difference is the iPad’s port. If your iPad requires a lightning connector, then you own a 4th Gen. iPad. The iPad 4th Gen. also has the model numbers A1458, A1459 and A1460.

iPad Air

The iPad Air debuted in 2013 with thinner bezels and a smaller, lighter body. Its model numbers are A1474 and A1475.

iPad mini vs. iPad mini with Retina Display

The original iPad mini came out in 2012, does NOT have Retina Display, and will have one of the following model numbers A1432, A1454, and A1455. An iPad mini with Retina Display (2013) will have one of the following model numbers; A1489 and A1490.

iPod Touch

The iPod Touch currently has four different models. The distinguishing feature of 1st Gen. iPod Touch is its flat, gunmetal-colored back. Each 2nd Gen. iPod Touch has a model number starting with MB. Each 3rd Gen. iPod Touch has a model number starting with MC. You can find the model numbers on the back of your iPod Touch. The 4th Gen. iPod Touch has cameras in both the front and back and a model number starting with MC5. Finally, the iPod Touch (5th Gen.) has the model number A1421.
