New iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C Features

iPhone 5S

iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5S might not look that different from the iPhone 5, but it has some major new features under the hood. The iPhone 5C, on the other hand, is more of a colorful refresh of last year's device. Here's what the 5S and 5C have to offer.

New iPhone 5S Features

  • Touch ID - The biggest new feature on the iPhone 5S is the fingerprint scanner located under the Home button. Apple is calling it Touch ID and it allows you to unlock your phone by putting your finger on the Home button rather than typing in a password. The feature has the potential to turn your finger into your credit card while also making your phone more secure.
  • Faster Processor - The new A7 chip promises to make the 5S twice as fast as the iPhone 5. If you love playing games on your phone, the A7 chip delivers twice the graphics performance.
  • iSight Camera - The 5S has a 15% larger sensor to gather more light. The new Burst mode lets you capture 10 photos per second and you can now take slow-motion video.
  • iOS 7 - The operating system has new look (brighter colors, flatter icons) and a long list of new features including smarter multitasking, AirDrop for sharing photos or documents, and iTunes Radio.
  • Color Options and Pricing - The iPhone 5S comes in three color options; Silver, Space Grey, and Gold. The Gold seems a little too flashy, but to each their own. The price points on a two-year contract follow Apple's usual formula; $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB.

iPhone 5C Features

  • A Refreshed iPhone 5 - The lower-cost iPhone 5C is a bit like a refresh of the iPhone 5, but in a more colorful, plastic shell. There is no fingerprint scanner, no new A7 chip, and no dual LED flash on the camera.
  • iOS 7 - Like the iPhone 5S, the 5C will ship with iOS 7 installed. Expect all the features, except for the ones that will make use of the fingerprint scanner and superior camera. The bright colors of the 5C mesh nicely with iOS 7's new palette.
  • Color Options and Pricing - The 5C enters iPod territory with color options in white, pink, yellow, blue, and green. The 16GB model is $99 on a two-year contract and the 32GB model is $199 on contract. Apple is not releasing a 64GB option on the 5C.

This year, it was all about colorful options and improved security and ease with Touch ID. If you're ready to upgrade, click here to see what you can make on your old phone.
